Genocide Today:
Where are there trouble spots?
South Sudan: In July 2011, South Sudan became the world’s newest country after its citizens voted for independence from Sudan. The country faces great challenges as it seeks to build its democratic institutions, overcome a history of internal conflict based on ethnicity, and resolve ongoing tensions with Sudan over the region’s oil resources. Since the 1950s, the Arab-dominated government of Sudan has tried to impose its control on African minorities on the country’s periphery. More than 2.5 million civilians have been killed in a succession of brutal conflicts—between north and south, in Darfur in the west, and in other regions.

Syria: Since its outbreak in April 2011, the conflict in Syria has already cost well over 100,000 lives, displaced millions, and involved numerous atrocities and crimes against humanity. Its increasing sectarian nature puts certain regions and peoples at risk of genocide.

How can I do anything about it?
EndGenocide.org
“Never Again!” That’s what leaders in the United States and throughout the world declared after the Holocaust. Yet tragically, in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur millions of people lost their lives, lost their families or were forced to flee their homes. History doesn't have to keep repeating itself. The powerful movement in response to the Darfur genocide showed us that by acting together, we can compel our elected leaders to act on their responsibility to protect innocent men, women and children from brutal regimes. We believe that, working together, we can prevent mass atrocities and we can end genocide by:
  • Sounding the alarm and demanding action;
  • Stopping the enablers of genocide and mass atrocities; and
  • Making genocide prevention a core value in U.S. foreign policy.
Genocide Prevention Task Force (Part of the US Holocaust Museum):
The Genocide Prevention Task Force was launched in November 2007, and released its report to the public on December 8, 2008. Co-chaired by Madeleine K. Albright and William S. Cohen, the task force was co-convened by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, The American Academy of Diplomacy, and the US Institute of Peace, and it was funded by private foundations. Its purpose was to spotlight genocide prevention as a national priority, and develop practical policy recommendations to enhance the capacity of the US government to respond to emerging threats of genocide and mass atrocities.

I threw together this T-Shirt tonight
$25.00 is a pretty fair price. The shirt would have been less with a less fancy design, but I thought 'Khan' himself would be a perfect person to feature.

The 2015 test has been conquered. The World Is Yours!
Now the T-Shirt can be, too.

Order today!
The campaign ends on Tuesday, May 19th.

Congrats to James Scanlon on winning a $2000 scholarship from KPRC TV in Houston

They featured him on the morning news segment recently. The video is outstanding! Really worth checking out. They award James in the conference room as they were talking to the AHS Top 10. So many of those students are in the video as well.

Proud to have had James in AP World and proud that he did so well on the AP Psychology test. Best of luck at Rice University! #GoOWLS

WHAP MOCK Practice Test - Small Gym 2015

We did a full mock/practice AP World History test yesterday in the small gym. Packed with 200+ kids, it was quite a thing to see. It definitely reminded me of the Chinese Civil Service Exams. :)

The scores on the multiple choice portion were excellent! A high of 96! And the average score was up 15% compared to the first practice test. Fantastic job everyone! I am very proud of the effort.

REMEMBER: Don't quit. Don't put your head down. Keep trying. Not only for you, but for all of the classmates in the room that might fall victim to social pressure. Apathy, stress, and doubt can spread like a virus. One kid has their head down, another, and then another... soon the idea spreads (silent but deadly) through the room that "This test is too hard!" Don't believe it. Keep fighting.

Remember 3 extra FRQ points will equal a total of 8 Multiple Choice questions! Every one counts.

And yesterday all of you kept working (or at least looked like you were, which is important - remember). I could not be more proud of the effort. Thank you!
200+ strong!
From any angle - this was impressive.
70 M/Choice questions: 55 min. + 10 Min break. + 3 FRQ essays in 2 hours = success!
There was a lot of "Werk" done yesterday. We are a week away! And just about ready to do it.
Visualize success.
Very, very proud of the effort. It went w/o a hitch.

Episode 1
Niall Ferguson shows how the vast apparatus of the Chinese state has always been called on to subjugate individual freedom to the higher goal of unity.

Niall Ferguson travels through this vast country to ask how a fifth of humanity can live under a Communist system of government with what looks like a capitalist economy. He tracks down the people who can really explain the new China, from newly minted billionaires in China's megacities to survivors of the madness of Chairman Mao.

Travelling the length and breadth of the Middle Kingdom, he reveals the enduring importance of Confucian philosophy and imperial bureaucracy in the way that China works. But he is startled by the persistence of the Mao cult, despite all the millions of lives lost in the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

Finally, after a visit to China's African empire, he answers the questions that should concern all of us: Will this turn out to be the Chinese century? Should we be scared? Or will the Red Dragon crash and burn?
Ferguson & his 'friend' ~ "The way the Chinese think is as different as the way they write."
